How to Care for Your Granite Counter Tops Without Ruining Them.

Granite countertops are for the wise quality seekers. You shop around for well

made products that serve you well and are going to last. The last thing you want to do is invest your well earned money into a great product like granite counter tops, and ruin them because you’re using the wrong cleaning products on them.

Standard cleaning products contain harsh and abrasive ingredients, including bleach. Bleach will sometimes say that it’s safe for properly sealed countertops, but that’s debatable. It is acidic and will break down the sealant over time. Also, if there is a break in the seal somewhere, the bleach can make it’s way into the compromised spot and corrode the makings of the granite.

Additionally, using harsh or abrasive chemicals is often a violation to the granite company’s warranty, meaning your mistake could really end up costing you in the end.

So now it’s clear, don’t use harsh or abrasive cleaners and sponges. Windex, acidic cleaners like vinegar, lemon, lime, or anything with ammonia or bleach. Frequent use of these chemicals will dull and weaken the sealant over time. Basically, the harsher the cleaner, the quicker it will break down the sealant.

Make sure your granite countertop is sealed. While granite is a very hard surface and less porous than marble, unsealed or weakly sealed granite will soak up oils, spills, and stains. To check whether your granite is sealed, leave a few drops of water on the surface. If it beads up, you have a secure seal. If after a few minutes the water has soaked into the granite, then it’s time to reseal the stone.

Wipe up spills as soon as you notice them, preferably with a gentle and soft fibered pad or towel, with warm water and a mild or gentle dish soap.

Makes 2 cups

Ingredients:

• 1 cup water
• 1 cup vinegar

Directions: Make a solution that is one part water and one part vinegar. Mix and then pour into an empty clean spray bottle. Spray on hard-surfaced fruits and vegetables and scrub lightly. Rinse thoroughly until the vinegar aroma is gone. For more delicate fruits and vegetables, pour the same 1:1 solution into a bowl. Add the berries, lettuce or whatever it may be and let sit for a few minutes. Rinse well before eating.
